What Does The Pelvic Floor Actually Do????

Have you ever wondered what is the pelvic floor and why is it so important?

The Pelvic Floor has four important functions and they can impact your daily life.

1. Stability of pelvis, hips, and lower back

2. Support the organs including your bladder, vagina, uterus, and rectum ( including supporting the uterus during pregnancy)

3. Sphincteric function (ability to hold pee and poop in)

4. Sexual functionIf you are find yourself experiencing any of the following symptoms you should consider seeking assistance from a health care professional including a MD or Pelvic Health Physical therapist.

Pelvic pressure, heaviness in the pelvis, poor breathing, belly pooch, urgency of urination, frequency, incomplete urination, leakage with cough/sneeze/laugh, constipation, hip/groin pain, low back pain, difficulty picking up/holding/carrying baby/child, postural fatigue, pain with nursing/holding baby, discomfort with exercise, pain with sex or tampon/menstrual cup insertion.

What To Expect When You Go For A Pelvic Health Physical Therapy Evaluation?

  • A Pelvic Health physical therapist's goal should be to create a comfortable space for you to share your symptoms, discuss your concerns, determine the root of the problem, in order to resolve your issues through specialized therapy.

  • Your evaluations should be done in a private and safe room. Your comfort and as the patient, you are in control. You should never feel pressured into discussing or partaking in any part of the evaluation that makes you uncomfortable. The job of the pelvic health physical therapist is to help you along on your journey towards healing.

  • Your pelvic Physical therapist will explain the anatomy of your condition, how different areas of your body may be affecting your pelvic floor, discuss your daily bladder and bowel habits, they will complete an orthopedic external evaluation on you, followed by internally exam( per your consent) to properly assess the pelvic floor muscles. The goal is to figure out what is causing your issues and help you solve them.

  • They will include you in a plan of care with appropriate treatment goals to allow to return whats most important in your life.
